There is an article on msdn http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms734601.aspxthat describes the four supported ways to change windows resource protected (wrp) files or folders. or look at the MSDN Vista SDK groups

thanks for the reply, the actual prob i am having is that i need to alter the 'files = 40' to 'files = 100' at the end of config.nt. Ican enter config.nt through the command prompt and scroll to bottom and change the value. but when i try and save and exit it comes up with "edit was unable to create or access the file c:\windows\system32\config.nt" bit of a headache!

Go to DOS Prompt. Right click and Open as "Administrator". Change config.nt from read only with the attrib -r command. Then you can open it with edit or notepad and make changes and save. I had the same problem and needed to add more files for an old DOS program. Works great now under Vista.
